He who is alone completely, makes camp where he pleases
Caterina Albert i Paradís (l’Escala, 1869-1966) was the first Catalan woman to take a man’s name, Victor Català, as her pseudonym. Her writing can be divided chronologically into three stages. The first is the period between 1902 and 1907, during which she published “Drames rurals” (1902) “Ombrívoles” (1904), “Caires vius” (1907); and the novel “Solitud” (1905), one of the most emblematic Catalan narratives from the 20th century, in 1918 she began writing again producing the novel “Un film (3,000 metres)”; “La mare Balena” (1920); “Marines” (1928) and “Contrallums” (1930). The third stage began after the end of the war and her mother’s death, with “Vida mòlta” (1950) and “Jubileu” (1951).
Her writing has come to be known as “rural naturalism” or “ruralism”.
