So I can get better photos Carlos Manich decides to take the door out on my side and tells me not to worry. We are wearing seat belts and the ultralight aircraft we’re travelling in is carrying parachutes. The aircraft turns into the wind, accelerates down the runway and for a moment, as we take off, I feel a slight sense of vertigo. Directly ahead of us I can see the majestic Medes Islands. Below, the straight lines of the paddy fields. “They’re dry at the moment but when they are flooded it’s magical,” says Carlos, “They reflect the sky and so you see the sky above and below”. We fly along the coast from Pals beach to Palamós, enjoying the sunny skies and stunningly blue sea. Carlos mentions that he saw a whale this morning.
We head for the area, without moving too far from the coast, but this time luck is not on our side, the cetacean has moved on. Now the coast of Begur (Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Fornells..) appears below us with its transparent waters, and a few small boats are enjoying the solitude of its coves. Unable to stop taking photos, I listen intently to Carlos as, through the headset, he reels off the names of the places we are flying over. At one point we are above Tamariu, we then pass by the Sant Sebastià lighthouse before flying over Llafranc and Calella. From the air, everything looks different and the Costa Brava takes on another layer of understanding. You feel like you could reach out and touch its small semi-secret beaches and amazing houses in spectacular settings. When we fly over Palamós we allow ourselves to be drawn in by its bay and begin to turn back towards the Aeroclub. This time our route takes us inland, over the stately masias and patchwork of fields dotted with green pine and oak woodlands. The interior courtyards stand out in Palafrugell and Pals rises like an historical stone monument.
The landing is much smoother than expected, and as soon as we touch down, two storks circle upwards on the thermals. Seeing them rise I think how lucky they are and already want to get back into the skies.
