Castelló d’Empúries is without doubt one of the main towns of the Grand Route of the Pyrenean Counties. From the 11th C. on, it was the capital of the County of Empúries. A walk through its streets reveals the charm of its medieval past.
Notable buildings The Basilica of Santa Maria, also known as the “Cathedral of the Empordà”, is certainly the most notable building. It houses the Parish Museum with the fantastic gothic alabaster altarpiece and the unique Romanesque altar basin for adults and children; these pieces give the church something special. Another remarkable building is the medieval Curia prison, which at present lodges the Tourism office and the Medieval History Museum of Castelló d’Empúries. The graffiti made by the prisoners on the walls of the cells are noteworthy, as well as a collection of Jewish gravestones, and the audiovisual presentation “Between the Crown and the Sword: the Saga of the Counts of Empúries” that recounts the medieval history of the town.
