The history of this family guesthouse goes back many years. What once started out as a beach bar became a little hotel. The big step came eight years ago, when Guillermo Arquer took over and started remodelling. Arquer is innovative, but above all he is a conscientious environmentalist. He has preserved the wonderful setting while providing the guesthouse with all the requisites to guarantee all guests a comfortable stay all year round. One of his basic principles is to think globally and act locally; taking into account that earth is a biological organism that needs taking care of. Based on the studies of the biologist Edward Wilson, who took note that there are three times as many ants on the planet as humans and that their activity is beneficent to the planet, Arquer decided to open paths for them. Every square meter of the guesthouse’s extension is covered by plants that are watered with rainwater and grey water from kitchen and bathrooms. This is a simple way of increasing vegetable biodiversity. Birds, butterflies, frogs, and toads have come back to the surroundings.

A stay at the Hostal Empúries is a new and surprising experience. Guests are met by an “Experience guide” who offers programs with a biologist guide and a cultural guide to help discover the surroundings. To enjoy this place is to contribute directly to the sustainable transformation of tourism.

Rooms are comfortable and welcoming, with ample bathrooms and impressive views on the Mediterranean and on the pinewoods around the guesthouse. Living room with fireplace, library, large and well-lit reunion rooms, and lots of space to get lost in this house by the seaside. Both restaurants, the Portitxol as well as the Bistro del Mar, offer two ways of having a meal with one common element: the quality of organic products that are to a large extent produced here or by trusted producers. The food here is remarkably well balanced and tasty.

To round off the experience, they give you the opportunity to participate in their solidarity project in Burkina Faso in which everybody who works here takes part. This is an efficient team fighting to defend and preserve this magical place.
