Each Saturday this ecological market offers its wares in a different village of the Baix Empordà.
In these globalized times when they import mushrooms from the Ukraine, ceramics from Vietnam, and shrimps from Japan, there are still people who struggle to conserve local and ecological products. The Association Mon Empordà is formed by people of all ages with the aim to encourage all that is made here, to recover the values of our country, and that all this may be achieved in a responsible and ecological way without chemicals or genetical modifications. You can find a bit of everything at the Mon Empordà markets: local, seasonal, and biological fruit and vegetables, wine without sulphite, mushrooms and truffles, healing plants, naturally baked bread from traditional flours, and natural biodynamic cosmetics made from local plants. We also meet craftsmen who work their materials in the traditional way, such as ironsmiths, esparto and wicker weavers, or potters. The aim of this group goes beyond being just a market. They also want to be a platform to promote all local initiatives that are ecological and natural. “We organize exhibitions, workshops, conferences, and courses related to the environment,” they explain. Many workshops are also for children, who learn to respect the environment through games. “Kids are the future and it is important that they learn early to love and to respect nature.” The Mon Empordà markets end with vegetable paella that cooks slowly throughout the morning.
